DUCKS UNLIMITED
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl.  These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people.

Only those activities which contribute directly toward that end shall be undertaken by Ducks Unlimited, Inc.

BACKGROUND

It all started over half a century ago during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, when a group of sportsmen banded together to form an organization that would become known as Ducks Unlimited. North America's drought-plagued waterfowl populations had plunged to unprecedented lows, and the founders of DU decided to do something about it. They incorporated the fledgling conservation group in 1937, and within a year, 6,720 supporters had raised $90,000.

Ducks Unlimited is recognized as the world's largest private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization. DU's membership stands at over half a million, and its conservation projects are found throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico-wherever waterfowl breed, migrate or winter. Dozens of species of ducks, geese, and swans rely on this critically needed habitat year- round.

From the very start, DU focused on projects in Canada where 70 percent of North America's waterfowl are produced. Even today, a majority of DU's habitat conservation work continues on the upland nesting sites and shallow wetlands located within the Prairie Pothole region.

In 1974, DU turned its attention to Mexico. There, wetland projects offer secure wintering habitat where waterfowl can rest and restore energy for the spring trek north to breed.

In 1984, DU began building projects in the United States to provide waterfowl with breeding habitat, wintering grounds and stopping places along their migration corridors.

DU has also been INSTRUMENTAL in implementing the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP). The NAWMP is an international agreement among the United States, Canada, and Mexico that established goals for rebuilding North America's waterfowl population to levels of the 1970s--a breeding population of 62 million and a fall flight of 100 million.

Waterfowl are not the only beneficiaries of DU's habitat conservation work. More than 600 species of wildlife live on DU project sites including several that are endangered-the whooping crane, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, piping plover, and least tern. In fact, wetlands are one of nature's most valuable and productive ecological systems. They are central to the overall health of our environment by recharging groundwater, purifying polluted water, moderating floods, reducing soil erosion, and providing recreational opportunities for all of us.

MEMBERSHIP

Ducks Unlimited truly is a grassroots, volunteer-based organization. Its members are conservationists and lovers of the outdoors who live throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In FY 1996/97, grassroots fund-raising events such as member and sponsor banquets, shooting and fishing tournaments and golf outings generated 57 percent of total annual revenues and 70 percent of total membership. In 1996, DU volunteers hosted 5,034 such events. Some states also contribute a portion of their duck stamp fees to DU for habitat work.
During this past year, 79 percent of all DU's income was translated directly into habitat conservation programs. This habitat is needed desperately by ducks, geese, and other wetland dwellers in order to survive.

Threatened and endangered species benefiting from DU projects include some of the following:

Aleutian Canada Goose
American Bald Eagle
Blunt-Nosed Leopard Lizard
California Clapper Rail
Giant Garter Snake
Hawaiian Coot
Hawaiian Hoary Bat
Hawaiian Moorhen
Least Tern
Louisiana Black Bear
Peregrine Falcon
Piping Plover
Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse
San Joaquin Kit Fox
Stephen's Kangaroo Rat
Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle
Yuma Clapper Rail
Whooping Crane
